Massimo @ Federal Hill

“Food is our common ground, a universal experience.”  (James Beard)

Before we proceed with this blog post, I would like to make a disclaimer that I am not a foodie or widely versed of gastronomic proportions. I am however, a person who is always hungry (figuratively and sometimes, literally!) and enjoys surprising my palate.

So one day, my young colleagues and I decided that it is of great importance to try out one of the new Restaurants in Federal Hill. And here’s how it went:

Massimo’s interior is eclectic and edgy. With its Canary Yellow comfy chairs, inviting pew and classic tiles. It is Hip and possess a youthful vibe.

We arrived at 4pm and was ushered to what they call as The Godfather table.

1The Godfather’s Booth/Table

This “booth” can actually fit 6 people and still enjoy their intimate dinner.

(red onion, sliced pear, marcona almonds, smear of whipped ricotta cheese, lemon vinaigrette)

I am not a “salad person” maybe because everytime I eat a salad I feel like I’m a goat in the bush. But this Arugula Salad is divine! It’s light and fresh. So fresh I felt like eating the garden…

This has got to be one of the best salad I’ve ever tasted!

Pork Belly
(served over fantina polenta, cranberry agro-dulce, topped with charred peppers)

I am not a big fan of the pork belly. Simply because I have tried the best pork belly in the world and nothing will ever compare  to Philippines’ finest. Believe me! Pork belly is my expertise! (Ha Ha Ha!)

Don’t get me wrong, the pork belly is good (the girls loves it!) but I just had better.  The polenta is absolutely amazing though..

Fettuccine Ala Carbonara
(pork cheek, tossed with peas, parmesan cheese on top, guanciale, poached egg)

I grew up from a third world country and we love seafood, maybe because we were surrounded by vast amount of water. Rice is considered our staple, Pasta (mostly Spaghetti) is usually cooked or prepared during Parties and special occasions. I’ve had Fettuccine and carbonara before and though it is good, I am not inclined to pasta with white sauce.

What can I do? I do not have a sophisticated palate. I am not going to pretend (or be hypocritical) just because I am now residing in US. I am who I am and I will not apologize for being myself.

Needless to say, this entree is good (as the girls seems to love it!) but its not just for me.

(red sauce base tomato sauce, grana padano cheese, short ribs)

Gnocchi (n(y)ok-ee) is absolutely amazing!

Okay, so I looked at the gnocchi and thought to myself, “This is gonna suck!” because I have never tasted gnocchi ever and I am not a very adventurous person. (Exhibit 1: I order the same exact food on the same restaurant. If I go to Teriyaki House, I will order Spicy Ramen. Every-effin-time!) In my brain, a gnocchi is more of a ravioli. Imagine the surprise when I tasted it! It’s like explosion of flavors in my mouth. I love the texture and hands-down, my favorite ever. We were told by Samantha (our very knowledgeable head waitress) that this was braised for hours.

The short-ribs is cooked to perfection! Kudos to the Chef!

(sweet potato risotto, brussell sprouts, panchetta, vincotto)

Scallops and Risotto, need I say more?

15027697_1290649424362315_36036249678980413_n5th Course
(pumpkin white chocolate pudding, candied pecans, poached cranberries, salted caramel gelato)

I was ultimately surprised of how I loved this pudding. Initially, I am not a fan of pudding as a dessert but to my surprise, it’s probably my third favorite of our meal. Of course my 2nd fave is the Arugula Salad and I can still vividly remember the taste in my mouth.

I’m converted! Now I’m a Believer!
